How the course works

Colour Principles for Quilters - Part II

Themes

theme - a unifying or dominant idea, motif

theme style - means the way in which the theme is expressed

How you arrange color and tonal values, creates the color mood

A seaside theme can be implied in a quilt using the colours and tones of the coast — pale beiges, pale golds, tourquoises, blue greens, soft sandy yellows.

But if you use 'theme' fabrics - with shells, waves, other seaside feauture printed on them, the theme is obvious.

Practice for themes

Have a browse through some magazines and select images that illustrate the following themes:

marriage
age birthday
teenage girl
toddler boy
golf male
golf female
travelling

Write each word in your workbook and as you look at the pictures, write down the colours/imagery used in the image which illustrate the theme.

Block design

star grid

Draw this block in 8 inch size in your workbook and glue fabrics to it to get blocks that illustrate as many of themes above as you can.
