Colour Principles for Quilters - Part II

Style or mood using colour in your quilts is simpler than you might imagine

mood - means a state or quality of feeling at a particular time

style - means the way in which something is said, done, or expressed

Colour doesn't stand alone in a quilt.

Schemes can allow the viewer to feel certain ways — bright and happy, nostalgic, rich and luxurious, young, feminine, masculine...

Some common psychological responses to color have worked their way in to our culture, such as...
"Seeing red", "Feeling blue", or "Being green with envy".

How you arrange color and tonal values, creates the color mood

The peace you feel at the seaside can be reproduced into a quilt using the colours and tones of the coast — pale beiges, pale golds, tourquoises, blue greens, soft sandy yellows.

But, if you were to use the dark values of all these colours, a more intense feeling can be ebgendered — perhaps even a blue mood!

Practice for colour mood

Have a browse through some magazines and select images that evoke the following responses:

excitement
peace
hunger
luxury
nostalgia
masculine
feminine

Write each word in your workbook and as you look at the pictures, write down the colours used in the image which make you feel the response.

Block design

star grid

Draw this block in 8 inch size in your workbook and glue fabrics to it to get blocks that illustrate the each of 'feelings' above
