I have loved this pattern since I was first aware of patchwork quilts. I made a cushion using steel pre-cut templates about twenty-five years ago. I used portions of the block in the border of Listen With Your Eyes (the original quilt).
If you look at one corner of the block, you can see the pad (the orange part in the picture at right), with the claws surrounding it.
The block is a seven patch: seven squares across and seven squares down. You could combine the four little squares in the 'pad' of the paw into a larger square if you wanted to save some sewing.
You can sew blocks to each other. (Right)
Or use alternating blocks for a more spaced out design. See quilt 2.
They can be straight set or on point. See quilt 3.
They can be positive negative. This means some are dark paws on light ground, some light paws on dark ground. See quilt 4.
Or you could use different sized blocks in an on point border. See quilt 5 below.
This is a wonderful old favourite.
I hope you try some of these styles in your own work.
If you like to use foundation paper piecing to construct blocks, the pattern is provided for this.
You could use templates if that’s your preferred piecing method, they are also provided.
Rotary cutting is very straightforward and instructions are also provided.
